Judy Rhese of LSAHS, who also attended the church before it closed, said the structure was built in 1924 by the congregation on land purchased by the Anglican Diocese of Edmonton.

Due to insufficient funding, the church has not been used for years, which has also forced local Anglicans to find another way to practice their religion, by renting one day per month from the United Church. .

“Our mandate is to preserve history; the history of the community, ”said Rhese.

LSAHS hosts an annual Heritage Weekend fundraiser, but the event does not raise more than $ 3,000.

The group was quoted from $ 6,000 to $ 15,000 for the relocation of the church, which does not include the preparation of the new site or the money needed to repair the building once it is transferred. .

The decoupling of the kitchen from the main part of the church and the reinforcement of the walls are estimated at $ 2,000 and the preparation of the new site at $ 5,500.

“If we don’t move it, it will just be sold with the lot and demolished. “

Applying for one of the Historic Building Grants is not an option for LSAHS because, to be eligible, the structure cannot be moved from the location.

“You have to leave it where it is and restore it,” Rhese said. “And the whole point of having it in Rochfort would be to have it with our museum, our log cabin and the schools, which are all original buildings.”

Their goal is for the transfer to be completed by June so that people can experience the historic church while visiting the museum in July and August.

LSAHS will continue its efforts to find sponsors, eligible grants and any other form of assistance for this project.

“We don’t have all the funds. Any little thing would help.
