Man arrested as historic church donation box recovered

A man was arrested in connection with the theft of a historic box just hours after it was recovered by police.

A large, ornate church collection box was taken from Boston Stump, along with one collection box for the Royal Air Force Association and two for Poppy Appeal.

The box is believed to have been damaged but was collected from a skate park in the area.

A man in his thirties was arrested and released pending further police investigations.

The Stump posted a thank you message on their Facebook page.

He said: “We are absolutely delighted to announce that our box has been found!”

“He did a little travel, tried a little skateboarding, looks a little worse, spends a night in the police cell, but comes home.

” Thanks a lot for your help. “

Parts of the box are believed to date back to the 1600s, to the time of John Cotton – a Puritan pastor who spent 20 years in church before being forced into hiding and later sailing to Boston, Massachusetts. .

Reverend Alyson Buxton posted a heartfelt appeal on Facebook in an attempt to retrieve the items.

He said: “We had two Royal British Legion Poppy Collection Boxes stolen, one Royal Airforce Association Collection Box stolen and this beautiful, VERY LARGE donation box.

“Money is replaceable – but this fantastic historic box with so much sentimental value is not.

“Please can we get it back!” “

His appeal has been shared nearly 1,500 times.
