Gunn Historical Museum wins awards for “American Story” exhibit

WASHINGTON – The Gunn Historical Museum recently received three awards for its exhibit, Washington Connecticut – An American Story. This innovative work, designed by SandorMax and made possible through a grant from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development, was created by museum staff and volunteers and shares the stories of the unique people, places and events that have shaped Washington’s rich history.

“We are very proud that our ‘Washington Connecticut – An American Story’ exhibit has been recognized with three prestigious local and national awards,” said Chairman of the Board, Sal Sorce. “The awards reflect the exceptional skills, knowledge and enthusiasm of a committed project team. We hope the exhibit thrills our visitors with the many wonderful stories and artifacts that make up Washington’s rich history.

]The AASLH Leadership in History Awards are the country’s most prestigious competition for recognition of achievement in national and local history, according to a statement. The awards program encourages standards of excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of history across the United States, and the winners represent the best in the field. By publicly recognizing superior and innovative achievement, the recipients of the Leadership in History Award serve as role models and inspiration for others.

The League of Connecticut History Organizations: Award of Merit 2020 The League of Connecticut History Organizations presents Merit Awards to institutions and individuals who demonstrate the highest professional standards and who enhance and deepen understanding of the Connecticut History. The purpose of the Merit Awards is to recognize the care, thought and effort invested in these contributions and to inspire and encourage others by recognizing outstanding contributions to national and local history.

The CLHO Awards Committee said of the exhibit: “We are impressed with the Gunn Museum’s well-developed research process and the involvement of the community in formulating the content of the exhibit. The result was a thoughtful and comprehensive history of the city of Washington that connected this place to larger American history in a meaningful way. “

Graphic Design USA: 2019 American Graphic Design Award Graphic Design USA (GDUSA) is a leading organization for the design industry whose mission is to identify and present best practices and exemplary design in all its forms. Based on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, GDUSA shines a spotlight on organizations that have demonstrated design excellence at the national level. Of the 10,000 applications submitted in 2019, a very selective 10% were chosen as winners. The Gunn Historical Museum exhibit, created by design agency SandorMax, received the GDUSA Design Award 2019 for excellence in exhibit design.

The Gunn Historical Museum is located at 5 Wykeham Road in Washington, CT. The museum will reopen to the public on June 20. The exhibition can be visited by appointment on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All visitors are required to wear face masks and the number of people in your party should be no more than five.
