Concerns about Proposed Changes to “Significant Historic Landmark” at Rushden

Objections have been raised against the proposed modifications for a Rushden house described as an “important historical landmark”.

A request has been made for external modifications to 55 Bedford Road in Rushden.

Permission is requested for modifications, including the replacement of part of the existing lawn with a hard ivory coating applied to all elevations, including the existing annex building, and new entrance steps and a raised patio at the front and on the sides of the house.

Objections have been raised over proposals to change the exterior appearance of 55 Bedford Road, Rushden (the top image shows the proposed front elevation and the bottom image shows the existing front elevation)

However, a number of objections were filed against the request.

One objection reads: “This house was built in 1926 by Walter Charles Tarry who owned the Tecnic Shoe Company also based on the site and built in 1923.

“The house is such a fine example of Charles Rennie Mackintosh design that it would be a shame to change the look.

“I oppose the plans because the rendering of the whole house will mask the original features of the historic design, it is part of the story and should not be altered in this way.

“The noise, the chaos and all of this construction issues will be overwhelming for people living nearby, especially if / when they turn in the garage which is next to a bungalow on a private road.”

Another objector said: “This building is important to Rushden, keep our beautiful historic buildings we have so little left, why destroy history to replace it with bad buildings without design and thought, our past is more important than money. “

An opponent appealed directly to the claimant, stating: “Please could I ask the current owner not to render on the beautiful arts and crafts style facade of this important historic monument.

“The history of the building would be deleted if the proposed rendering was applied, once it is gone it is gone forever.”

Another objection reads: “It’s good to see someone update the property, but the intended rendering of the existing masonry / woodwork is not in keeping with the heritage of this magnificent building.

“I grew up on Bedford Road and remember this house as an example of classic design among the surrounding ‘boring’ houses.

“Coating the exterior would ruin the character of the building and deprive Rushden of a classically designed exterior.

“So, in summary, I oppose the building permit as is and suggest that the coating part of the application be denied.”
